Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki (AEFUTHA), Ebonyi State, Nigeria, joins the global community in celebrating International Women’s Day, observed annually on March 8, to recognise and honour the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women across the world.
The popular saying, “If you train a woman, you train a nation,” reflects the invaluable contributions women make to society. Women continue to demonstrate remarkable strength and versatility as homemakers, organisers, leaders, and professionals who play vital roles in families, communities, and institutions.
Over the years, women have continued to break barriers and make significant strides in diverse fields, contributing meaningfully to national growth and development. No longer confined to traditional roles alone, women today are leaders, innovators, professionals, and changemakers who continue to inspire progress and transformation in society.
The theme for International Women’s Day 2026, “Rights, Justice, Action for ALL Women and Girls,” underscores the urgent need to safeguard the rights of women and girls, promote fairness and justice, and take deliberate action to create opportunities that enable them to thrive.
The theme also highlights the importance of empowering young girls and the next generation of women through education, mentorship and equal opportunities, recognising that their growth and development are essential for building stronger families, communities and nations.
Across Nigeria and around the world, *several women have distinguished themselves through outstanding contributions to national development and global advancement. Among them are Professor Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Professor Oby Ezekwesili, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the late Professor Dora Akunyili, the late Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti and Margaret Ekpo,* whose legacies continue to inspire generations of women and young girls to pursue excellence and leadership.
As AEFUTHA commemorates this important day, the institution reaffirms its commitment to supporting initiatives and policies that promote gender equality, protect the rights of women and girls, and encourage their full participation in all aspects of society. The hospital also recognises and appreciates the invaluable contributions of women within the institution whose dedication, professionalism, and service continue to strengthen healthcare delivery and institutional growth.
On this occasion of International Women’s Day, AEFUTHA celebrates women everywhere and calls for collective efforts to protect their rights, advance justice, and create opportunities that allow every woman and girl to realise her full potential.
Happy International Women’s Day.
