Brief History of the Hospital

The Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki as it is known today was established in the early 1930’s by the British Colonial Administration. At the time of its establishment it was designated as a small health centre for the treatment of wounded soldiers and personnel during the Second World War (WWII). At the end of the World War II, the Eastern Regional Government took over the management of the hospital before passing it over to the East Central State Government.

From then, the hospital has transformed and changed name from the Casualty Control Centre, to the Abakaliki General Hospital and then to the Federal Medical Centre, before assuming its present status to Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki.

By 1973, the hospital had a full complement of Consultant Staff and was fully approved for the training of House Officers.

During the late 1970’s, the hospital ran into difficulties. Its facilities deteriorated, and there was a short fall in the number of consultant staff as the East Central State was split into many states by the then Federal Military Government.

The hospital became a Federal Medical Centre in March, 1999 following an agreement between the Federal Government and the Ebonyi State Government. During his presidential campaign tour to Ebonyi state in 2011, the then President Goodluck Jonathan promised to upgrade the Federal Medical Centre to a Teaching Hospital, and December 7th of the same year (2011), the President fulfilled his election promise by proclaiming the Federal Medical Centre a Federal Teaching Hospital.

He further directed that the state owned Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital, be absorbed into the new mega Teaching Hospital which gave birth to what are today known as Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki (FETHA1 and FETHA2), with the former FMC being AEFETHA1 while EBSUTH became FETHA2.

The handover/takeover processes were completed in the same December 2011, including the absorption of the staff of the defunct Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital into the new institutions (FETHA1 and FETHA2).

The Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike Ikwo got approval from the Honorable Minister of Health, to use the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki as a Teaching Hospital for the training of medical and paramedical students of the College of Medical Sciences of the University. Subsequently, The Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) renamed Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki to Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital Abakaliki on 7th February, 2019.

Since then, the hospital has grown from strength to strength and presently has a carrying capacity of about 5,000 staff. The hospital has transformed into a Mega Teaching Hospital with an estimated outpatient patronage of 6,000 monthly.
