In a remarkable display of social responsibility, the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria at Alex Ekwuene Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, has undertaken a noble initiative by offering free cataract surgeries to thirty patients. This benevolent act of Corporate Social Responsibility aligns with their commitment to community welfare and planned as a part of their Annual General Meeting (AGM) for the year 2023.

Professor Robinson Onoh, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, expressed that the association, propelled by its dedication to the well-being of the community, recognized the impact of cataracts on the underprivileged. He emphasized that this gesture was a response to the unnecessary blindness faced by those lacking the means for essential eye care.

What makes this initiative even more noteworthy is the crucial role played by the hospital management in ensuring its success. Professor Onoh highlighted the significant support provided by the hospital, including the provision of equipment and a conducive environment. This collaboration with various professional bodies, NGOs, and corporate entities showcases the hospital's commitment to enhancing service delivery.

Dr. Obiora Asiegbu, Chairman of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria, praised the hospital management for their integral role in making the free eye surgeries possible. The collaborative effort between the association and the hospital reflects a harmonious dedication to giving back to society and providing essential services.

Dr. Helen Ginger-Eke, the organizing committee chairman and lead of the eye surgeons, shed light on the economic challenges faced by retired individuals and the impact of the harsh economic climate. The free cataract surgeries provided by the association, she explained, break down financial barriers, offering a lifeline to those who would otherwise be unable to afford such vital procedures.

The beneficiaries of this compassionate endeavour, including Isu Okorokwo and Benjamin Eze, expressed gratitude and admiration for the consultants and the hospital. Their heartfelt appreciation underscores the profound impact of this initiative, not only on their vision but also on their lives.

As we celebrate this compassionate act, it serves as a beacon of hope and a testament to the transformative power of collective social responsibility of The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria, in tandem with the unwavering support, commitment and dedication of the AE-FUTHA Management team which exemplifies the true spirit of healthcare professionals dedicated to the provision of optimal and excellent healthcare service to Nigerians and humanity at large.
